Now, I know it is technically Mrs. Gillies' turn, but I'm jumping the gun simply because the 4th is like #3 on the great food holiday list (after Thanksgiving and Christmas...) so I thought it would be, I don't know, un-American to not blog.
I basically spent all morning asleep, waking only around 1. I was rather hungry, so Steph and I decided to find a lunch truck. Would you believe that after walking to all the lunch trucks on campus there was not ONE open??? Not even the Korean people who own Pete's lunchbox opened! And some trucks were like not even there.
It was rather dismal, so we walked to 30th station and hit up Dunkin' doughnuts. Because america does run on dunkin'...especially on the 4th! that place was maad busy and sadly infiltrated by homeless people. This lady sitting at the table next to us asked us to watch her chicken. I was rather confused, and I think she noticed so she made the guy at the table in front of us to watch her chicken for her. It was so odd, especially since once she came back she just threw it away.
Anyway, I swore that I would do organic chemistry until it was time to go to the art museum to see the concert and fireworks, but I ended up watching "Harold and Kumar Go to Whitecastle" which was funny because my hunt for breakfast that morning was strikingly similar...well, just in the fact that I was really hungry.
We all left to go to the art museum around 8 and en route was invited to a party of gentleman whom we had never seen before. It was rather funny because it was clear that we had somewhere to go, since we were following the mass exodus of people who were crossing the bridge to the art museum.
We got there and it was like these 3 10 year olds singing on stage, in like the Hillary Duff kind of way. But then thankfully things progressed to a bunch of old guys who sang and danced like the Temptations. And lastly, John Legend who was really good. He had Mayor Nutter dancing the entire time. I tell you, that man is definitely getting reelected. The fireworks went off soon after and they were spectacular. The gold, falling star fireworks are my favorite.
Crossing the bridge was crazy because everyone was leaving the same way. The houses on the river were great, because they put up red, white, and blue lights that outlined their houses. They were far away so they didn't look cheesy. We were following the bicycle path, when we ran into this homeless man who was giving everyone the same advice of "Follow the yellow brick road!!" When one chick behind me had the audacity to say that they were off to see the wizard, he barked even loudly "Follow the yellow brick ROAD!"
At any rate, we passed the house where those dudes wanted to party at like 8 o'clock and were not surprised to see that the party was in full swing, spreading to all the other houses surrounding it. We had places to go...like 7-Eleven, the only place that you can count on being open at 11:30 on the fourth of july. There were some seriously smashed people there, with the entire sidewalk being covered in broken glass and smelling like beer. After picking up a few essentials, we went fountain jumping. I would have swam in it, but damnit, I had my contacts in. So the best I could do was wade. At any rate, its comforting to know that even 10 year olds in Philadelphia are growing up fast, as one leaned out of a car and offered to get wet with us. Philadelphia, I tell you, was the founding city where all the founding fathers congregated. I wonder what they'd think of it now.
But! The BIGGEST part of the 4th, after fireworks (arguably)is the FOOD. So here we go. Please remember that I'm not at home, so this is what a college 4th dietary plan looks like
Breakfast/Brunch: #4 on the combined menu or a medium coffee with a bacon, egg, and cheese on a biscuit.
Lunch:an eggroll with taco bell's fire sauce amply applied. and tea.
dinner: mac'n'cheese.
Once again, happy fourth everyone!!
