Only now do I realize just how awesome this site has been for me. Where else can I go to read about two great things: food and friends? Erik and I started this thing more or less as a joke, but it is most certainly no longer a joke. Nothing that may or may not end in public flogging is a joke!
Mrs. Gillies is right, this isn't just another diary-blog, nor is it just a bunch of people talking about what they had for dinner. It connects us and holds us together at a time when we're most likely to drift apart.
It's because of this site that when I go back home I don't have to ask Erik what video games he's returned to, Ian what irks him most lately, Mrs. Gillies what she's been reading, Dan what he's been writing, Meredith about the latest and greatest Hallmark stories, Anna how organic chemistry is going, Stacey what this year's tween camper fads are, and Jake what's happening in New York.
I was about to make a comparison involving horcruxes and how we each take a bit of each other with us , but screw that.
What I'm trying to say is that this site offers an escape from our daily lives, both from the good and bad, and that I think, speaking for myself but maybe others as well, that its impact is felt even beyond my cramped little college desk. And I thank you all for that.
It's been a year, guys. What's in store for the next year? Who knows. Site-wise and otherwise I've got a few things rolling around in my brain, but they're still rolling around - like those little toys where you have to get the balls to settle in holes. We'll see.
Now for my perfect day of food:
It's a late Fall, early Autumn Friday - my birthday. I'm woken up before school by some combination of my brothers and sister. As we used to do for everyone's birthday, they hand me the day's comics and set down scrambled eggs with toast and hot chocolate by my bed. The hot chocolate is filled with marshmallows and Calvin and Hobbes has made a miraculous return to newspapers.
I go to school, but my teachers decide that we're all smart enough already and send us back. I make it back home in time for lunch: a serving of fresh fish croquettes cooked by my Grandmother. The fact that she hasn't cooked these in years is not lost on me and I savor each bite. This is followed by a bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream. My Grandmother always had croquettes and ice cream waiting at the drop of a dime.
For dinner my family decides that in my honor they will drop their distaste for Chinese buffets (my Mom complains that there's too much good food and she can't help herself.) I have General Tsao's and plenty of other things that I don't even know the names of. Oh and none of the foods on my Perfect Food Day have any calories whatsoever.
For dessert we return home where a homemade cheesecake is waiting for our stomachs to settle down.
And then later that night I go to the Blue Fountain Diner of course.
To all who read and all who write: Cheers.
