Pride before the Fall?

The best thing I did today was watch my 4 year old diva self on camera. It was mid-afternoon and since my mom, my sister, and I were just sitting around after lunch, we decided to watch an old home video. Everyone's favorite one was made on the first day we bought the camera. Here's the scene: My mom, sister, and I are sitting on the couch, with my dad behind the camera. My dad tells us to sing a song, so my sister starts singing loudly. For some reason, I am displeased and start howling. My mother tries to persuade, flatter, and bribe me to just sing along, but I cry louder. My sister is still singing unperturbed by my displeasure. I run away and hide under the dining room table. When my mother takes a stab at directing, she points the camera in my direction, which displeases me yet again as I proceeded to throw my tea set, piece by piece, at the camera.

My father, who I must add looks like a gypsy with a mustache, fro-hair, and the earrings my sister put on him (they were mine--I must have thrown them at someone), must have decided I was acting irrationally, spanks me and puts me in time-out. I seem more miserable than usual, just leaning up against the wall, but I am not crying anymore. However, I do look as if someone has stolen all my Barbies. My mother, who is now directing the camera, asks while giving my sister a close-up if I would like one. I respond by dancing in front of the camera with my dress pulled up. Cheeky, I tell you! I get put back into time-out, where I am further irritated by everyone, especially the camera pointed in my direction. Hence, I hike up my dress over my head and stand with my face veiled, and the rest of me showing for everyone else to see. Looks as if I had my priorities mixed up...or did I?

Ah, well my 4 year old self valued pride over dignity. I'm not sure much has changed. My pride is the hardest thing for me to swallow and oftentimes it keeps me from saying what needs to be said.

Breakfast: Indian breakfast dish of unniappam and a roasted egg dish
Lunch: Roti and mutton curry
Tea: Coffee and toast with butter and homemade strawberry jam from Georgia
Dinner: Tea and toast with butter and homemade strawberry jam from Georgia.

That jam is delicious. I would eat it straight from the jar if I could, without everyone here yelling at me for contaminating a jar of jelly.

Insomniacs Dream the Darndest Things

Mostly actually, insomniacs say they just want to go to bed. But this one can't because she spent most of the night on their knees in front of the toilet, retching because of a spastic cough that came from nowhere but keeps a girl from sleeping peacefully. Or because there is a rogue centipede the size of an insomniacs pinkie running around. Or because it's too hot and my room is so dusty, that air conditioning will make an insomniac cough/retch more. And there's no vacuum cleaner because the last one broke and it was never replaced. Or because an insomniac may feel hungry after all that retching and ends up eating toast and doughnuts with tea.

What's an insomniac to do? She can't pick up a book and read it on her bed for fear of the centipede, not to mention the dim lighting in her bedroom. Due to a lack of couches and lighting, the living room is also out. So all an insomniac can do is dip into her resources and creep out into one of the apartment lounges. It's hot as hell but she curls up anyway and reads "Death of A Salesman." It sounds vaguely familiar and suddenly she reaches an epiphany. "I have read this book before! When I was in 6th or 7th...my sister was reading it in English class!" She really likes the play and is happy she bought it at the used bookstore, along with "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "Long Day's Journey Into Night." She adores these plays; they're all about dysfunctional people trying to come to grips with their oddness and failing, failing, they latch onto some other dysfunctional person.

An insomniac can then only reminisce about how she always wanted to be in a school play. How excited she was in 4th grade to find out she had Mr. Kausch as a teacher, who had put on a play last year when she was in 3rd grade. She waited eagerly all year for the play, but nothing happened. Meanwhile, the gifted class put on Shakespearean plays, but this poor insomniac wasn't in gifted; she skipped all the questions regarding circles on the IQ test because circles frightened her and she didn't want to deal with them. Then came middle school, the era of musicals, which has its own place, but wasn't so close to this insomniacs heart. She pulled the curtains over the play stage and did things that bored her or mattered to her then, but not so much now.

Now what she feels like is akin to a shriveled pea pod, curled up like a hand clenched into a fist. It's all work; work is work, play is work, the treading from work to play and back to work again is work. She has to wake up early tomorrow...shower, meet with the landlady, go to work, go to class, meet people for lunch, take out the textbook she never bothered to buy from the library, take good notes, and since she's feeling tired, maybe she'll go home and study for finals there. It's been awhile since she's gone home.

She's also recently discovered Maya Angelou and her remarkable gift in poetry. This insomniac has always disregarded Maya because of Oprah's blatant support of her. Oprah..the most modern mogul the world has to offer. Oprah, with her Favorite Things, her book club, her magazine, her show has expanded an empire who's reach and influence mirror those of Alexander, the Ottoman Turks, and the Romans. Hooray Oprah, thank you for doing what someone else could be doing and dressing so well while doing it.

Insomniacs often rant. They just want sleep to come. Maybe they're just blowing off steam, waiting for a cloud to form and float them away to greener pastures and snowier mountains.

Ah, still nothing. TUEESDAY, 9/1/09 is DOOMSDAY.

Breakfast: 2 pieces of cinnamon raisin toast and OJ
Lunch: 2 pieces of cinnamon raisin toast and OJ
Tea: Bluberry Lemon Streusal and Coffee
Dinner: An appetizer sampler of onion rings, fries, chicken strips, and mozzerella sticks (most of which eventually ended up in my sink) and coffee

A Glorious Day
Sunday, April 5

Today was so bright and beautiful, with the sun streaming out. I woke up at my alarm at 8, but reset it for 9 and went back to sleep. I did some Physics in the morning, but I'm unsure about how much headway I made there. I'm going to say not too much. It gets really hard to swallow that stuff and keep it down there. Or at least floating around in my memory.

Around noon, Silpa called me and invited me to lunch with her family, which was super nice of her. I declined though because I was feeling a little awkward today and was feeling like being pleasantly lonely.

So I walked first to Drexel's library. I perused the new books section, which was filled with the awful, trashy looking books, amidst a few biographies, and nonfiction books. I knew what I needed. I meandered down to the basement where I found the "Teen" section. It was just one wall of books with some very old looking books, a few newer looking ones that had children's books from my elementary/middle school years. I smiled as I looked through every single shelf and made a few choice selections. "A View from Saturday," "The Golden Compass," and "Many Waters." I'd read the first and last before, but wanted to read the second.

I walked the 7 blocks to the Philly Diner, where the place was overflowing with people. Many of them were black, just fresh from church. I took a seat at the counter, because there was only me and there was no where else to sit. I looked briefly at the menu, but I got what I always get. The French Decision, (very officious) composed of scrambled eggs, 3 strips of bacon, and 6 wedges of French toast. This time I asked for cheese in my omelette. Of course, it took 3 or 4 cups of coffee to down the entire thing. It was so pleasant to sit there at the counter, eating breakfast in the middle of the afternoon, with a children's book in hand, and after-church babble encapsulating me. Not going to church myself, it was almost the most religious expereince of the day. The air was cool as the many ceiling fans ruffled the air, my hair, and cause my napkin to flutter down towards the floor.

I would look up, look around sporadically, as the door would open. I wouldn't see anyone there, although there was always someone there. A sense of looking up without seeing anything. How wasteful! Think of all those people without eyes to see what matters, what beauty surrounds us all.

The door opens and a well-dressed black family walks in, to the delight of the entire congregation in the diner. They all enthusiastically start singing "Happy Birthday." To which particular member they were singing to was a mystery to me. There was a grown mother, who looked very pretty, a dad, a little boy in his suit, and an adorable girl with her hair in those twists with Sunday barrettes and a little white sweater, with a finger in her mouth. I smiled at it all. How wonderful to walk through a door and have everyone greet you so warmly.

I tipped less than usual because I'm learning that my generous tipping combined with my compulsive shopping, is making me quite poor. So that's one corner I'm trying to cut. Eating less would also be a good idea. I bought a piece of Oreo cheesecake to go, upon leaving.

I wandered out, past the Penn frat houses, past and past, 'till I realized there was a little arbor area that I had passed on my way to the diner. I moseyed over there. It was so beautiful, with several green-metal tables and chairs that one finds in backyards, were under some tan stone columns, with vines climbing up. I took a seat in the warm sun, slouching in my chair so the sun would hit my neck and face, all the while placing my feet high on another chair. I read comfortably there, amongst the other students who were studying in the warmth. There was a car alarm going off for most of the time, that would hush silently, as if it had been gagged. But then it would start right up again, as if it had bit through the gag. I didn't mind, like I normally might have. The sun was too warm, I was so full, the book was so nostalgic. People passing by were complacently enjoying the day as well. I saw a dear old lady trying to keep up with her family as she querrolously piped "You're going to have to wait up for me." But they really were getting ahead of her, so she was completely justified.

I left as soon the sun stopped shining on me, and walked home. Silpa was back by then and I suggested a walk. We went down the stairs under the bridge that spans the Schuylkill. There was were all the cyclers, dog-walkers, and joggers convened. I assumed it connected to the walkways near the Art Museum. It was fantastic and so serene to watch that dirty river flow past. It was calming.

I'm back in the room now, thinking of starting my lab notebook for Organic. I have to sometime tonight; lab is tomorrow at 9 am. Hasta luego !

What Did You Have For Dinner Last 4th of July

Breakfast: Coffee and cherry danish
Lunch: Banana and Tea and Walnuts
Tea: Dorritos and Tea
Dinner: Pasta, Fish fillets, apple-walnut-carrot salad

The fireworks were spectacular. I had a great seat on this wall that took me a while to climb onto. I saw the last 15 minutes of the Sheryl Crowe concert...I'm not a huge Sheryl Crowe fan. I know like 3 songs and she's a little whiney for me sometimes.

I watched "Up" in the afternoon, found it rather adorable.

So what everyone else do?

Time is Trickier than You Think

I am bored. So I shall blog. Forgivee me.

I'm sitting in an empty classroom right now because I am so foolishly early. Today, my goal was to wake up at 6. However, since I went to bed at 1, I found this to be quite impossible. I woke up at 8:30 which was what I thought half an hour before my class. So, I hauled ass, wolfed down a scrumptious breakfast of cherry pie and tea, while dressing as sloppily as I could, still wearing the T-shirt I wore to bed and pulling on some fresh green sweat pants.

Dashing, dashing, dashing. I live right across from the building my class is in, so no worries there. However, it takes forever for the elevator to come and I start to pace. By the time it gets there, I'm jumpy because I think I will have to make an entrance

At any rate, i dash across the street, which is mercifully empty, and clamber up Drexel's mighty marble staircase to get to my class. I walk in to a room that was surprisingly full...

What's this? I'm not late...Who are all these people?? I spotted my roommate and my ex-roommate and wondered "Am I dreaming?" when all it was was the earlier section of my class...about to leave.

I was half an hour early to my class. Goddamn. I could have had another slice of pie. I'm really not with it in the morning. So here I am sitting in this empty classroom that's slowly filling up waiting for class to start

Who's got plans for the 4th? All are welcome to come to Philly and watch the fireworks :D

AWOL

As Mrs. Gillies pointed out, I've gone AWOL. I really, really, REALLLY hate being AWOL. Being AWOL involves trying to wake up at 6 am, but hitting snooze till 8:30 and waking with deep disappointment in yourself. Then one rolls out of bed and eats cherry pie and tea for breakfast before sitting down and studying a long, tangled chemistry lesson. AWOL's eat the best however, because food is the only positive thing going for them. Breaks consist of food. And showering. But otherwise, my nose is at the grindstone (correct idiom?) and I'm just not ready. NOT READY for this stupid, life-ruining test.

What have I been doing these past few months? Oh yes that's right, not taking this test seriously. Trust me to start getting ready 15 days before the exam. Good luck with that, covering physics, chemistry, organic chemistry, and biology in 15 days. GOOD LUCK.

I think I'm going Humpty Dumpty here, but seriously. I'm having serious qualms as to if I can pass this test...so I may switch to a later test date? Although, I really would rather not. I want to have a good summer! So if I take it beginning of July, I'll have a WHOLE month of not knowing if I passed or not. Think how happy I can be that whole month. Beach, books, movies, pals, FACEBOOK...

Bah. That was my day today, except I went to B&N on 18th to pick up another MCAT book. On my way there, it was beautifully sunny and I was attired in jeans and a green shirt. After perusing MCAT books and buying the one I wanted, I walked out of the store to realize that it was pouring rain and thundering to boot. Now, I had no hat, no sweatshirt. I was wearing sandals, my pants were, well pants, and went to the ground, and I had my peacock bag with me, which was made of cloth and would quickly absorb whatever the sky was throwing out. The only thing I had going for me was that I was wearing green and not white. Well what could I do but walk home?

As I was walking back, I noticed I was the only pedestrian without an umbrella braving the sidewalks. Everyone else was hunched under the hangover parts of buildings or peering outside of crowded cafes. I felt like I was on the catwalk, an obstacle catwalk, where the runway is unvevenly paved and occasionally has a stream running through it. I was also competing with the busy taxis and buses, which felt obliged to splash through the puddles next to the sidewalk. My hair, was a hot mess.

Got home, showered, and am about to have dinner.

Breaky: tea and pie
Lunchers: Turkey, egg, and cheese sandwich. And a kiwi which I was at a loss on how to peel it.
Din-din: Fries, chicken, and green beans and brocoli. Maybe cherry pie for dessert.

P.S. Can you believe what's going down in Iran? Hope that cheater with a carved out face doesn't crush the protesting...but I mean, it is Iran. CNN, gmail, and perez hilton are the only sites I allow myself to look at online. And I feel that perez is just a mistake I need to fix.

Love and kisses till next time, in which case I will not speak about MCAT for a month. To your relief and mine.

SKOOL AIN'T KOOL PEEPS

Hello friends, I'm your dontwantabeinschoolrightnow girl. Are you tired, rundown listless? Do you poop out at parties? Are you unpopular? The answer to all your problems is in this little blog...

School is totally owning me. It's taken over my life. I have a written schedule with every hour planned out, a countdown on my wall, on my planner, on my desk calendar reminding me how many days till MCAT. Balancing that with school is getting ridiculous. Especially since I've barely dented in all the MCAT shizz I need to do.

All good things have a hard, weary road. That's what I keep telling myself. Someday, this will all be worth it.

I don't really have anything to say unless you're interested in electrostatic forces or some stupid stuffs like that. I have a new tv show, Weeds, which I cannot watch until I'm done MCAT.

Breakfast: potato chips, banana, and sugar cookies and tea
Lunch: coffee and 2 sticks of mozzarella string cheese..and an apple
Dinner: PBJ, banana, nuts, and tea

Zara Zara

Today has been pretty lackluster, like the sidewalks and puddles outside. They're all this mottled gray color that reminds me of dying elephant. I was supposed to have a 3 hr lab at 9, but I awoke to the buzz of my phone as my friend texted me saying that lab was cancelled. Then my other friend called me to tell my lab was cancelled. Here's a tip: don't call me in the morning, I'm incoherent. She called me later to laugh at me and ask me what the molecular weight of something was. Anyway, just to make sure, I hauled myself out of bed to check my email, where indeed, lab was cancelled!

Yesterday was a lot better. I "studied" at Barnes and Noble. I started to do some work for a while actually. Then I decided to take a break and picked up "Perks of Being a Wallflower" and of course the whole studying cause was lost.

The book itself was interesting. Substantive because it had a lot of weird parts in it. Unlike most teen lit which is generally very cliche and predictable. Most teen lit makes me so mad. It's such bullshit most of the time. I hate walking past the teens section and seeing books that are all based on romance. I'm serious when I say some things should just not be made into books. If I ever retire peacefully (YES I AM THINKING ABT RETIREMENT ALREADY!) I will start a bookstore when I will only sell good books. Not bullshit books. I will give all bloggers a discount for putting up with this rant.

But I also hate books where the author's name is bigger than the title. Perhaps this is why I cannot read Stephen King (although I hear he is quite good). I'm talking books like the Danielle Steele and Mary Higgins Clark books. In 6th grade, I read a lot of Mary Higgins Clark because Maple Point's librarian was a fan and I was sucking up, so she would stop checking my passes all the time and let me make copies of stuff. It totally worked. However, after reading all 9 of these books or whatever, I realized that the perpetrator was always, ALWAYS the romantic interest. The women were all "strong" that were left to the whims of cruel fate, leaving them in a bad situation, with bad people. That, and all of the characters drank martinis and had car phones and dressed really sophisticated. Don't their fans notice that every book is the same? Is that why they read the author? They can count on what's going to happen, and how things will be described. There's no surprise or room for shock.

I like books that come from no where. Like, the only weird book I haven't really enjoyed was "Flatland." And that was because it was about geometry. I enjoyed Mr. Combs's interpretations of circle and square. However, I did not enjoy his quizzes on this stupid book. I'd have to ask Kris Doll or someone who read to tell me what happened really fast.

But I digress. I like books where you don't know what's going to happen at all. You sense it, and sometimes you want something to happen to your favorite character and you feel keen disappointment when things go the other way. But it's so worth it because they're alive that way. Even though their life is compressed between two covers and penned by a mortal creator, characters like that belong to no one...they're victims to what we ourselves are subjected to, good or bad, so we relate and love them for it. At least, the ones with good taste do :P

I always get whimsical after I have hazelnut coffee. Really, how can I not? Even organic chemistry makes sense. Anyone else who's taken organic chemistry knows that they completely made up most of this shit. Sometimes, they say that the oxygen gets protontated first. Sometimes, they're like, not that happens second. And then sometimes they're like, "we're not even sure this is true, we're making this up."

I have nothing else o say except that I am sleepy. And very unproductive. And 73 days till MCAT.

Oh. What's with the title? Well, whenever I'm at B&N they play amazing music. So I always end up buying the CD they're playing because it's so mind-blowing at the time. One time, I bought 60's Mowtown Hits, Vol. II. I don't regret it at all; stuff like the Supremes, Marvin Gaye...very relaxing. Wish music at clubs were still like that...at least the dancing would be better too. Another CD I bought once, was Bossa Nova for Lovers. That I do regret buying. I've barely listened to it. It was totally the B&N spell that pulled me into buying that CD. I mean, it's good, it's just not interesting enough to make me want to listen to it. Now yesterday, they started playing this CD that made me jump to my feet as soon as Track 1 started rolling. That whole damn CD was worth the first track. It's been playing on loop ever since. I hear it now, when it's not even playing and I'm glad. This lady's voice is like satin...I don't know how much of it is effects, but I really enjoy it. The funny part is I don't even understand any of it. I looked up the translation and promptly wished I hadn't. I'd rather made up my own meaning to it because it would have been a bit nobler than what it was really. 'Tis not a grand affair. Zara means slowly I think. But like organic chemistry, I could be making that up.

Breakfast: banana and tea
lunch: 2 slices of bbq pizza, iced tea, and an orange
dinner: nachos and half a slice of cheesecake
midnight snack: hazelnut coffee and Twix.

STOP THE HATE

Okay. Why is the universe against everything I like?

For example, notice the cat/dog poll? the one that was previously TIED? some MOFO (no names here webmaster) has CHEATED and made dogs the winner.

Another example, the Rpatz hate. So he doesn't shower? It's an enormous attribute to his FACE that he's still so attractive. Besides, maybe this is his anti-tween twilight fangirl perfume that screams "STAY AWAY!!!!! I AM NOT REALLY EDWARD CULLEN!!!"

On another side note, I have joined the House MD addiction...I'm starting to understand some of the cases :D Well, mainly the reproductive ones...cause that was the most interesting subject we learned in Physiology this past term. I'm thinking of going into obstetrics...catching babies and all that. But dealing with pregnant women? maybe not, madunno.

Today, I registered for MCAT...I've been putting it off for MONTHS. And already it feels like there's an axe above my head...a time bomb steadily ticking, deciding whether or not I become a distinguished member of society or a working girl on the west end of Philadelphia.

Do you sense the melodrama? Clearly, I'm lacking things to do. I was on spring break this past week...you know, when no one else had break. So I spent most of it working at the English Department. Lucky for me, most of the profs weren't there, so the first two days I spent doing practice MCAT's online. The third and fourth days, profs started showing up, and seeing a work-study present to do all the bitch work, they happily produced papers to staple, hole-punch, and copy. If I were to become a professor, I couldn't possibly be as pompous and rude as some of these profs are. One of them was like, "Are you and English major?" And I sort of laughed and said no. She got a trifle offended by my laugh...idk why, I laugh at everything. In this instance, I was laughing at how much I wanted to be an English major and wasn't. But anyway, she was all "Well you know, some people are." Mentally, I'm thinking, Thank GOD I dropped the class I was supposed to take with you. No SHIT some people are English majors...I've been working here for a year, I think I'd notice a few of them.

Not to mention that the English majors here are snotty for no reason at all! Like, I went down to get free pizza at their party and one of them was sort of condescending, so I was all "Oh what are you doing after you graduate?"
"...Ummm...not really sure."
Yeah, that's what I thought. Not to say that people shouldn't be English majors! I would love to be one! Read books all day? Write papers analyzing them? Group discusisons? Hell yes! But you can tell that girl was an English major because she wanted to do something "easy" while hunting for a husband.

I'm venting here. I don't know about what anymore. I'm just mad at the world. There's not enough books. Not enough french fries. Not enough TIME.

AND, I have nothing but neurotisicms to say!

Breakfast: Tea and cake and a banana
Lunch: pizza and soda with the esteemed Stacey Gerlach
Tea: samosa with chips and ice cream and coffee
Dinna: ???? something that involves turkey. for my health's sake, hopefully also some vegetables

I have no concept of nutrition at all!

First Friday

Bonjour mes amies! I have been watching a lot of 90's cartoon X-men...the ones that were always on TV Saturday mornings and to which I have rediscovered my long lost cartoon crush on Gambit. The smooth talkin', kinetic energy manuvering, staff fighting, card throwing, Rogue loving Cajun. I wish people talked like him...with an accent, tons of bantering, and a healthy sprinkling of Cajun French. He also refers to himself in the 3rd person, but it's endearing because he doesn't do it that much. Why didn't they put him in the X-men movies?? Was someone drunk the day they did casting and skipped over Gambit's part? Which could explain why they picked such a stupid, sucky Rogue who has really lame hair and a sodden disposition (as opposed to her fierce mane and fiery self). Apparently, Gambit is in the Wolverine movie that's coming out. I hate to be a downer here, but the actor looks like a cooze. They should have MADE Josh Holloway be Gambit! It would have been so badass. I can't even imagine anyone else doing Gambit justice :(

ANYWAY, back to real life. Today was sort of uneventful. It's the breath before the plunge, seeing as finals are coming up in a week. They're still teaching us new shit though, so we have to work hard still in learning all that they're hurling at us.

Tonight, my roommates and a few other people were supposed to go to Mixto's for my suitemate's birthday dinner, but she canceled this morning. So we went to First Friday. For those unfamiliar, First Friday is where on the 1st friday of every month, the art galleries around 3rd and Market open their doors for free from 5-9. I think some restaurants offer food? I may be wishfully doing this...but a lot of people tend to show up.

It was my first time going to First Friday, but I'm definitely going back. My roomies decided to walk there (25 blocks ftw!) where we saw all the sweet shops and cafes. I think I counted 5 Cosi's. We stopped by this crazy looking store with this intense display of really outdated looking jewelry. After visually pawing through the display, we went in and looked around. It was this store which imported all its jewelry from israel where the artists worked on making the various necklaces, etc. It was really cool looking stuff, but so expensive! Even the stuff that was on sale was awfully high priced. We said good-bye to the lady. She had this chic scarf over her head, but she must have been pissed that we didn't buy anything so she didn't even say goodbye. I always hate walking into small botiques where you're the only customer. The vendor's hopes climb higher and higher as they watch you look around and they search for signs of commitment to some object. Then it all plummets when they realize you have no money or are a cheap bastard.

Back to First Friday...we first went to this sort of funky gallery where they had some interesting paintings and sketches and a helluva lot of printed T's. The dude there was like "we all used to be street vendors in NYC"and gave us his colorful business card and an ad for yoga on Tuesdays. It was really cool. Refreshment was this something bourbon cider. It tasted like shit, but it was the first one of the night, so of course I drank it.

Next, we went to this Jewish gallery, where this lady made knitted hats that looked really kooky. However, because Purim was being celebrated they had a special exhibit which was super cool. Photography wasn't allowed, out of respect for Purim. But it was a bunch of white tiles spread out throughout the wall, with black, hand-painted writing, saying something about Esther saving the Jews and helping the poor. It was longer and very poetic, but I disremember it exactly. A Rabbi was there and he was super cool too, because he wore one of the owner's multi-colored hats. Well he took it off to do the blessing. He gave a very lovely speech and then they handed out little cups of really sweet wine and excellent brownies. But he did the blessing thing in Hebrew and had a cup full of flowing wine. I didn't know exactly know what was going on, but it was so cool. Something wonderful he said was something like, "Wine is the drink of men and God. Why God you ask? Because wine makes men happy, which makes God happy. Not saying you should be an alcoholic, but enjoy!" It was my favorite of the night, not so much because of the art (those hats were insane) but because of the atmosphere! (The wine was really sweet...best I've tasted)

Next we went to an antique shop. This was also really cool because all the owners were stationed throughout (to prevent pilfering and breaking I imagine). I saw this really cool elephant, where one of the guys there was like "That's a cigarette dispenser from the 1920's!" And sure enough, if you turned the tail of that elephant, an unfiltered cigarette would fall out from below the blanket that was on the elephant. It was so cool. I would have bought it if I had $300 lying around to spend. They had wine too, but we weren't offered any. I think they only offered it to people who looked legit, like they could pay for an antique elephant cigarette dispenser for cigarettes that aren't even made any more.

The next gallery was one devoted solely to irons. It was incredible that this one gallery would have so many paintings devoted just to antique irons. There was this one display that was really sexual. Like this one painting of an iron was mounted on this abstractly genital patterned wallpaper. It was so weird, but it was sort of--interesting to see how some people interpret the simplest things. There were no refreshments, besides upon entering hearing a humorous joke, "I feel like ironing something now!"

The last gallery we went to was cool. The lower level had a lot of sculptures with dessert themes, like eclairs balanced on top of each other topped off with a slice of cherry pie. It makes hungry wanderers even more hungry. The upper level was intense. They were generally canvas paintings of crumbling structures or abstract lines. My favorite one of a pile of bricks that just fell from the wall of a building. It was also $12,000. I was so depressed. SO much cool shit, so little money! So I own it in memory, which will do for now I suppose. This place too had no refreshments.

We were growing weary and not finding anything too exciting around, we decided to stop by one of the 5 Cosi's we saw. I got what I always get: a turkey bacon cheddar melt. Deeelicious. Someday, I'll try something else on the menu. But I'm just too satisfied to move on. We had really good service, which always makes me happy. It wasn't too crowded, but not at all empty. We got a table with the oddly shaped couch, so there was a lot to be happy about. I'm terrible at knowing how much to tip, because I feel that 2 or 3 dollars is very miserly. So if the service doesn't suck, I tip 50%...or somewhere around there. My parents get upset with my generous tipping, but I get a secret thrill. A romantic at heart, I spin stories like this tip will help the waitress get a lip piercing or that cute dress she liked or a gift for her little sister. She won't use it to buy crack or to pay her douchebag boyfriend's cell phone bill. It's for her...something she wants, something she needs, something that will make her happy.

Took the subway home, where I wondered where my fellow passengers were going. The staring game is more intense on the subway than it is on the train. There's less time to scrutinize, so details must be taken in quickly, because you have no idea when they'll leave. People always jump up and run out the doors at the last minute, almost as the orange lights start flashing and the cool mechanical, but feminine voice begins to announce "Doors closing. Doors closing."I prefer the subway to the trolley. It's like a coffin on wheels. The same catacomb, same state of decay, where people look as if they're reaching out from a tomb. Hand stretched out, pulling down, signaling the driver for escape. The subway is like an underground spring or a garden snake, harmless and lively, secretly necessary.

Who's this poet that's reaching out on this First Friday? Maybe it's the wine. Or how a woman's hair might get in the way of the executioner's axe. Such a distraction, but she pulls it clear and then the blade runs true.

Such an emo metaphor, but finals really do suck! And I really am stalling...I've been online for like 2 hours. Doing nothing in general.

Breakfast: tea and a B-A-N-A-N-A-(S) (NO DOUBT IS ON TOUR!!!)
Lunch: bag of popcorn and strawberry doughnut
Dinner: Turkey Bacon Cheddar Melt with Chips, tomato soup, and Coffee

Plinky Plink!

Ah my lovely plinky plinks! What a boring day it was for me!

I was supposed to wake up at 8 am today to take a practice MCAT. But, I hit the snooze button and next thing I know I awoke to my Scooby Doo ringtone.

"Oh damn."

It was a group member who was supposed to come over so we could make ice cream cupcakes. We're in this technical writing class where we're supposed to write a set of instructions. My group came up with the brilliant idea of making ice cream, which took about 5 steps. It was too short! So we decided to make ice cream cupcakes which was another 3 steps!!

I'm really thrilled by the idea, which is why I loathe group work. It was assigned groups which is why I'm stuck with the group I'm with. They're nice but not the most creative or communicative and its so hard to get them all together. And even if we do, its not like we get much accomplished.

Anyway, we had made the ice cream yesterday (it was messy) and so this morning I hurridly threw on a sweatshirt over the pjs to let in my groupmembers. There was only one there and I moodily drank some coffee while muching on Nutter Butters while listening to him discuss Monty Python (it was my fault--I asked him about it--but it wasn't that terrible anyway so whatever). Anyways, made the cupcakes and stuck them in the freezer.

I decided to make something inventive for lunch. Rather than making easy mac, I cooked some vegetables and poured them in tomato soup. I'd never thought about it, but cooking is a lot like getting dressed. Mix and match, some things go together and some things just don't. And these things that don't go are those two things. It tasted not so great, but I ate it anyway with some fish fillets.

Went to my one class; it was pseudo boring. Came back and did the practice MCAT I swore to myself and my counselor that I'd do. Pretty boring and I felt like I didn't know a lot. Anyways, I ran home to use the bathroom and then dragged my suitey Lex to the library with me so we could get the free breakfast. Her one precondition was that we return by 9:30 so she could see McDreamy propose to Meredith. When I expressed some surprise at these precondition, her response was "I've been watching this show for 5 years, this is the moment I've been waiting for!" So I was like, okay fine. However, she took ages to find her ID. When we got there, she realized she didn't have her ID. And I was like, "MOTHER****ER!!" So I gave her my phone and keys and told her to go back to the apartment and get her ID while I went and had breakfast. She soon returned with the news that her ID was in her pocket to begin with! Breakfast however, was excellent!

So now, I'm watching Grey's with her and of course, McDreamy DOESN"T propose to her. How humorous, but so predictable. Let me just state that I'm not a McDreamy fan. At all. It's almost personal. Now I'm off to do some physics and laundry, how great!

Breakfast: Nutterbutters and coffee
Lunch: homemade tomato vegetable soup and fish fillets and disgusting homemade ice cream cupcakes
Dinner (which was actually breakfast): eggs, french toast, taters, sausage links, coffee, and a blueberry muffin. I really like breakfast a lot. <3

WATCH OUT FOR THAT SHARP SHOOTER!

I know each time I blog, I generally invoke my pride in living in Philadelphia and today is no exception.

I woke up around 10 to the buzz of a few helicopters and decided I should go home to see my momma who just got back from India. I left around 11:30...to where I ran into the largest amount of police force I've ever seen at 30th St. Station. Walking in, I saw four policeman on horses...with horse shit all over the wee walkway island where I normally make my enterance to the station. There was also a lot of street vendors hawking Obama family portraits, Obama calandars, and copies of Obama speeches. A large amount of satellites on top of vans blocking the side enterance were also visible. My normal enterance to the station was blocked off however, as were the front enterance to the main terminal. There were more police manning those doors and signs pointing us away.

I myself was rather confused as to how I was going to get to the regional rail portion of the station if all the doors I knew of were blocked off. In my wandering, I saw a few of those bomb-sniffing dogs as well. And apparently there were 4 sharp-shooters on the roof of the station.

I was debating on whether I should stick around to see if Obama was planning on walking around or something (I mean, with all that police around, why not?) but I wasn't sure if he left already or not. So I figured, what the hell, I'll just catch the train.

Or at least try to. The train was a good 35 minutes late. So I congregated on the platform with a host of hippie-ish looking people who had Obama buttons and memorbailia all over them. Upon conversing with a few of them, I found out that they too had missed Obama, and only had a fleeting glimpse of what could have been his car. They were doing a peace march (against the war in Iraq) from city hall to the station, so I suppose, weren't even aiming on seeing him, but trying to force the media into paying some attention to the war.

The train platforms were disorganized with people who were offput by delayed trains. The platform dude informed us, that the R3 was the last train held back so that the Obama Express could start its voyage, but then perhaps out of deference or maybe even fatigue, the R3 decided that its brakes should not work. So I was at the station for a good hour and a half waiting for a train that they SAID would only take half an hour.

Upon my wait for the train, I eavesdropped on a conversation one of the hippier looking peace protesters was having with these two ladies who had actually gone to hear Obama speak. From what I could gather, you needed tickets to even hear him speak (wtf?) and that the entire Obama family was there (with Michelle in casual purple...for those of you who were wondering/care).

Gah! I always miss this guy! He was at Drexel and I missed him (although I did meet his VP...Biden's the man)! He had open appearances in Philly during the capagin and I missed him! He was at 30th, (WHICH IS DOWN THE STREET FROM WHERE I LIVE)and I missed him! And I can't go to the inauguration! Boo!

Whatever. As long as he doesn't mess his job up, I'm happy.

Anyway, I don't know why all that police force was necessary. I mean, I do, but come on! It's Philly! Everyone loves Obama (as seen on election nite)! Even if you don't, you'd better be smart and not express it or a brotha will beat your ass. Soundly.

Philadelphia never fails in providing excitement. All that needs to happen is for the Eagles to win the superbowl and for us to get a superhero (note: the philly phanatic is a mascot, not a superhero). If this happens, Phialdelphia can only be proclaimed as the best place to live, what with having so many crazy, happy ( and profusely drunk) citizens living in it.

PS. Drexel has already emailed everyone about the Eagles v. Cardinals game and how no criminal activity will be tolerated...like they already KNOW the Eagles will win.

Breakfast: Toast with butter and jelly and french vanilla coffee
lunch: naan-ish bread and chicken curry
dinner: ???

*mrs. gillies, sorry for taking your night, but I was excited about not seeing Obama! Hope you don't mind and do/don't do something exciting to blog about tomorrow!*

Retourner

Well laddies and lassies, I apologize for the delay in posting. I cant only offer the skimpy excuse that school has begun and I was harried to finish packing, saying good-bye, etc.

I went to bed pretty late last night...around 3, which was stupid because I had class at 9. I awoke at 7ish to my phone. My mother called me to tell me that my grandmother had died. I was so sleepy that all I remember saying was "I'm so sorry" and I must have been pretty incoherent with sleep, that I don't remember how that conversation ended. I sprung to class around 8:30 and it wasn't until I came back that I remembered that my grandmother had died. Isn't that awful?

I can only procure the feeble excuse that I didn't really know my grandmother very well, although I was named for her (She's the original Anna). I've met her on two vacations in my consciousness. Once when I was 8, when my grandfather was dying and she was the strong, lively one. I liked her a lot, for all that we couldn't speak to each other. The next instance was when I was 15 and she was slowly starting to get like older people get, recapping her entire life. It was okay though; I could sit and listen and understand what she was saying, but could never answer her.

I've always been envious of kids with mom-moms and pop-pops because I could never relate to that relationship. We always lived far apart, and were separated even further by language. I know how to talk a lot more now, but it's too late. I'll never know anything about them from themselves, but by my parent's memories. And they'll never know me.

Sorry for the steady note of melancholy, but it's on my mind. My momma's taking it hard I think. She doesn't even know if she can get out of work for 2 weeks to go to India for the funeral. We all knew it was coming though, so it wasn't a shock. But it's still not something anyone wants to hear.

Breakfast: tea and cake
Lunch: lamb biriyani
Dinner: hasn't happened yet, but aiming on pasta with salad

IMMA CAT

This morning I seemingly woke at the break of dawn...well not really to catch the train back into Philly.

The best part of riding the train into Philly, is watching the skyline come in closer and closer, until I can't see it because I'm already a part of it. The second best part is watching all the people on the train. The WORST is seeing someone you know and even MORE WORSE is seeing someone you know and despise, so that you have to pretend not to see them at all.

I think I'm finally acclamated with the whole train business. I can keep my balance now, know most of the stops, and am irritated by newcomers who don't know anything or break the no-talking loudly rule.

So today I hunted. I hunted down my professors and checked all my grades. Because I have discovered that Drexel is determined to screw me over! So after hunting those elusive fellows (the only profs I had that were on time were Asian...take that as you may).

After which, I took my sister to go see Twilight. This being my third viewing, I knew all the right parts to hoot and holler at. Since the theater was empty when we got there, I was all eager to talk throughout the entire movie. However 2 chicks walked in during the previews and 2 more walked in right before the movies started. It was like a half-assed Noah's ark. Despite the smaller audience, I still "ow ow owed" at what I deemed appropriate moments. My sister was quite embarrassed. It was awesome.

Then it was time for MCAT class. Let me tell you: MCAT blows. B-L-O-W-S! Luckily, I have a rather excellent MCAT teacher who knows when I haven't done the reading and have no idea what the hell he's talking about. Thus, he doesn't call on me. He saves all the easy ones for me :D As in "Anna, please read question 1" or even "the answer can't have any acid, or any double bonds, or any halides, then a, b, and d are elminated. So, Anna, what will the answer be?"

It stings sometimes, that I don't know what's what, when I used to be game about shit like this. But no more...well, as long as I pass eventually right?

Came home where I ordered pizza and watched airforce one. Indiana Jones as President? Now there's a winning ticket! I've watched this movie since I was 8. And it never fails, the constant adrenaline rush of being the best President with the worst luck ever. Can you imagine Pres. Bush kicking ass like that? DOUBT IT!

Afterwards, I watched "Diary of a Mad Black Woman." I first saw this movie on the plane to India. I really liked how different it was from all the films I've seen. There's a strong religious element and its a bit idealistic, but there are scenes in it that I relate pretty strongly to. Oh, and that Orlando guy is maadd hot.

I'm actually just finishing watching it due to the fire alarm that went off at 2:15. Hooray for loud alarms in the middle of movies early in the morning with icy freezing rain on a fire escape near the train tracks where the R1 passes by every half hour!

Breakfast: Tea and a sole biscuit
Lunch: #2 on Taco Bell's Meal Menu: 3 Supreme Tacos (although I didn't eat all 3 right then)
Tea: Tea and cinnamon raisin toast
Dinner: Philly cheese steak pizza (awesomeness)

College is hard, girls should be easy...

College is very, very hard. This is what my father tells me everytime i am near a textbook. Which is most of the time. The rest of the phrase comes from Miss Stacey. You can ask her for the explanation (it's more fun to guess anyway) :D

I'm so sorry to be blogging on such an uneventful day, seeing as all I did most of today was study. That is until 5, 6ish when I couldn't take it anymore and decided to veg out by putting on the tv, cooking, and all out vegging out.

At first, I oscillated between Pride and Prejudice and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Then P&P ended, so I watched some of Notting Hill before getting bored and switching to The Santa Clause. That ended, so The Santa Caluse 2 it was! Thank goodness LOTR is so long and is on whenever the rest is on commercial.

The Two Towers is my favorite. I love Rohan better than all the lands of Middle Earth. My favorite scene in this movie is when King Theodin is at his son's grave. I relate a lot to Theoden. Eowyn and Eomer are also rather awesome. I normally fast-forward through all the Gollum-Sam-Frodo bits, because it gets tedious. Sam and Frodo have this very sloooow tense sexual thing going on. Even Treebeard irritates me sometimes with his slow speech. I'm a bit fastpaced in everything. I even play Monopoly quickly.

But I love Merry. There's a quick one for you! He's my favorite hobbit. I want to throw Pippin in the nearest well, evertime he does something silly, which is often. I want to set Frodo and Sam loose in a boat sailing the open sea so they can stare deeply into each others eyes like always. But Merry's the shit!

But now, I'm just sitting around waiting for Spiderman to come on so I can see James Franco shaved. Normally, I only see his youthful unshaven face on "Freaks and Geeks," a fabulous show from the late 90's which I am entirely obsessed with. But, I have admired James Franco since I discovered he was trying to get his PhD in English from Columbia. And that he was going to live in Paris to learn French to make a better PhD candidate. AND that he paints and has galleries with his paintings in it.

No. I'm not obsessed at all.

Do you think it'd be odd if I named any children I had after LOTR characters? Would they get made fun of that much on the playground? Hmmm names I like...Theodred, Faramir, Samwise, Arwen, Eowyn, Galadriel. I also think the name Mithril would be cool. But hard to spell. And say, for those who are not aquainted with Middle Earth.

My nerdiness is exuding from every word in this blog. I'll do something really badass next time to make up for it...I'll make sure of it! Just remind me, so I remember to do it. And blog about it.

Breakfast: Bagels with cream cheese'n chvies and French vanilla coffee and a banana
Lunch: a slightly charred grilled cheese sandwich with spinach and corn on the side and hot chocolate
Dinner: Bow-tie pasta with alfredo sauce, mixed vegetables, and a chicken patty thing. And pomegranate! It's fun to peel, like exploring a honeycomb. That's edible and a brilliant red color!

I'm too enthusiastic about all the wrong things!

MAN ON BIKE COLLIDES WITH BIOLOGY GIANT

It was a chilly night in Philadelphia on the night of November 11th. A studious biology giant was on her way to a make-up mcat class on upenn's campus. Fearing tardiness, she hurried and power-walked. While crossing 34th and Market, she noticed a man on a bike riding in the opposite direction. Not wanting to change course, lest the bikeman swerve at the same time, and run into her she continued on in a straight path.

It would seem the bikeman thought the same thing about the pedestrian, and so continued on his path. And so these two stubborn crosswalkers collided. The man on the bike freaked as the pedestrian stumbled around, catching the spectacles that flew off her face. Sadly, the specs were a bit crushed and the pedestrian a tad confused. She kept walking, not wanting to be late of her class. The biker yelled after her, begging her pardon and concerned for her health. The pedestrian kept on going until the biker got so obnoxious that the pedestrian turned and dizzily stated that she was fine.

And the pedestrian now has a beautiful bruise spreading on her thigh.

School sucks and I can't even walk down the street without being maimed. How awesome. I'm living for Thanksgiving break right now. Must go and study. When you cross a street, veer from any bikers. Seriously.

PHILADELPHIA CAN PARTY!!!!

I've never been much of a Phillies fan....that is until I saw them win and the ENTIRE city of Philadelphia started partying in the street. It was truly too awesome for words. People were climbing over moving cars, tipping newstrucks, and climbing up stoplights. The police came before things got too interesting. But heading to city hall, we all pretty much screamed along with all of the cars and taxis honking down market street. And all the people hanging out of them. This one dude got locked up by like 10 cops. I didn't see him do anything but he looked pretty wasted.

I've high-fived so many strangers, it's been too awesome. I actually watched the game! It was really like suspenseful. But it was totally kickass. I see why people are so crazy about sports.

Anyways, I would report more but I have this report due tomorrow. But no lab! As my TA said, "Your assignment on Thursday is to not bring your asses to class if the Phillies win...oh and get fucked up. Tip some buses." Upon further questioning, he replied, "I'm getting wasted regardless..the only difference is that I will probably be in my underwear if the Phillies win. So I will be too hung over to take melting points. Sorry."

LOL, I love Philadelphia. Will post some crazy pics later...

Blogged Out? For serious?

My fellow bloggers, I have nothing to say. It's shocking isn't it? I'm always ready to blogg on the futility of college and whatnot, but it has gotten too futile to even jest about. Exams are harder than ever, I'm lazier than ever and it doesn't end well. So here's a question for you:

Do you ever wonder if reincarnation seems valid? At times, I'm struck at how similar some people are. While the actual logistics of reincarnation are a bit hazy, I like to daydream about recycled lives and who could be whom. If I were a believer, I think I'd be Daphne du Maurier. A writer whose work Alfred Hitchcock based some films on, one of which is "Rebecca" my most favorite book ever. I only read it by mistake after picking out a random book off the shelf of Neshaminy's library. Her birthdate is the day after mine and she died a month before I was born. Eeerie...but I think it's mostly wishful thinking on my part. Sadly.

If I had the choice to go back and choose who I'd become, I'd pick Daphne anyway, or some woman that's remembered by what other people said, because no one knew what she was like. Pocahontas or joan of arc. But then, would I be who they would what they'd be remembered by? Or would they be whatever I brought to them?

Deep thinking tonight, all in the hopes of escaping the tedium that school work brings to the table.

Pretty Woman!

I saw this while I was scoping out videos to add to my organic chemistry play list. Why yes, I do have an organic chemistry play list, comprised of Hindi film songs. Why do I have a play list of music I don't understand? Why, so I can focus on reading and understanding boring mechanisms and reactions of course! Such music reminds me that life goes on, however artificially. The beat, the shrill sounds tell me that if I study really hard, become a doc, and move to a nice place, I might run into a Bollywood actor. And then I can ask him personally if he's ever embarrassed by the songs he has to lip-synch to.

Anyway this song, took me by surprise and fully entertained me. I think I've seen a grand total of 5 Bollywood movies in my lifetime, so I don't know what context this is in, but I think it took place in the US. The best part of this entire video may have been shahrukh khan rapping. I do believe I died once laughing at this.

Can you tell I did nothing today? I have nothing else to talk about except this random clip off youtube. I woke up around noon today and loafed around for breakfast. Then I went off to the library where I worked as slowly as possible it seems. Came back where I watched an episode of "Heroes" to which I am currently addicted. Heroes really brings up the valid point of, if you were to have superpowers, what would they be?

If I were on Heroes, my options for superpowers would be among this:
1. Insomnia: I would never sleep, but still function normally. Some may call this a futile superpower, but bitch please! Any college student will tell you this is indeed a superpower.
2. Caffination: To run a life fueled solely by coffee and other caffeine products is indeed a feat of a superhero.
3. Daydreaming: To daydream and have those daydreams come to life. DAYDREAMS mind you, not NIGHTMARES. It would be like tripping, except without the hallucination mix-up. Who's to say Lewis Carroll was not on acid when he wrote "Alice Through the Lookinglass," but is one of the higher-up species taking us to the next level?

Muahahahah what power would YOU have?

Breakfast/Lunch: 2 PBJ's and tea
Tea: 2 bananas and cashews and tea
Dinner: Pasta with Asian veggies and some leftover calamari
