Nailed it! and Ripe Avocados

I love looking at "Nailed it!" pictures on the Internet. You know how recipes often include a perfect glossy photo of the finished product, like this one I found of Cookie Monster Cupcakes. The top picture shows the way the cupcakes should come out, and the bottom picture shows the ones you worked so freakin hard on that the icing all melted and the eyes were falling off. And you measured carefully and used all the right ingredients too!

But I have totally diverged from the topic of this blog (which I have been so graciously invited to join -- thanks, Dan!): What I had for dinner... Well, here goes. Tonight for dinner I cut apart and devoured an entire avocado. I kept thinking, this isn't ripe all the way through, it's kind of crunchy in the middle, and eating it anyway. I always do that with food: I think about how something I'm eating isn't really that good but I finish it up because it's good enough and it's there. When we're busy and distracted by life's issues, food sometimes just becomes something to gulp down, instead of slowly tasted and savored.
I tell you what I have learned tonight: next time I want to eat an avocado, I will wait for it to ripen fully before I cut it open. I will be patient and I will savor the taste of its ripeness. This, I deserve.
